Downtown Safety and Street Ambassador

The DVBIA Safety and Streets Ambassador at the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association will assist the Community Safety Manager by providing aftercare to businesses affected by issues of safety, and follow up on all safety concerns from members and Ambassadors.

Role Summary

The focus is on business aftercare, promotion of crime reporting, street cleanliness and general advocacy for downtown safety. The Safety and Streets Ambassador is expected to exceed the programs objectives and assist in its development on behalf of the DVBIA. 

This person must have strong communication skills and solution seeking abilities. The ability to follow up and support is key. The job is fast paced and always changing. The ability to adapt is a must.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop investigative and information gathering skills. This position is ideal for candidates with an interest in Criminology or Law Enforcement.

**Must be willing to commit to a 6 month period of time to be eligible for this posting.**

Job Duties

  • Promotes the DVBIA community safety program to members and partnership organizations
  • Organize, schedule, and present training and information sessions to DVBIA members and the Downtown Ambassadors team
  • Represent the DVBIA and Downtown Ambassadors on a variety of committees
  • Identify and assist in addressing member-related crime and safety issues
  • Liaise with community representatives of crime prevention initiatives to exchange information, and support a collaborative approach to addressing downtown safety issues
  • Identify and assist in addressing safety and crime related problems by partnering with VPD, CPC, and other Public Safety Organizations
  • Researches, evaluates reports, crime-related trends and statistics to enhance community safety programs
  • Ensures management is appraised of developments within programs and initiatives, as well as significant incidents, issues, and trends
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, information summaries, and other admin duties related to the work
  • Assist businesses and VPD with preparing Arrest Packages with videos and victim impact statements
  • Promote Emergency Readiness with the membership
  • Follow up safety concerns from members and District Ambassadors
  • Feed safety data into the reporting system
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by the Community Safety Manager
  • Promote a safe, clean, and welcoming downtown
  • Provide supervision, training and direction for the Ambassador Clean Team
  • Liaise, coordinate, and dispatch the City of Vancouver mobile street cleaning teams, Goodbye Graffiti, and additional partner organizations to assist in the maintenance of Downtown spaces
  • Prepare and submit reports and summaries regarding all cleanliness related measurable
  • Gather and assess information related to the cleanliness of downtown
  • Liaise with the City of Vancouver and promote partnerships to ensure cleanliness issues are dealt with in a timely manner
  • Encourages and trains members to maintain their property as required, provides resources and information

Candidate Requirements:


  • Completion of High School or equivalent
  • Certificate / Diploma in public safety management or equivalent is an asset


  • Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated customer service experience
  • Experience in community safety programs an asset
  • Ability to speak additional language(s) is an asset
  • Previous Loss Prevention experience especially in Downtown Vancouver is an asset
  • Experience in international travel and cultures is an asset
  • Experience in using iOS, iPads, apps, social media, computers

Special Qualifications and Training:

(Note: These special qualifications are not required for hiring and will be provided during training process.)

  • Completion of BST (Basic Security Training)
  • First Aid (Occupational First Aid 1)
  • Disability and Cultural Diversity Training
  • World Host Customer service training
  • CPI Training (non-violent crisis intervention)
  • Radio use and etiquette

Other Requirements

  • Must possess an excellent command of the English Language, both written and oral
  • Ambassadors are required to spend the majority of each shift walking and standing outdoors in the elements
  • Must be able to walk and stand for up to 8 hours
  • Some light lifting may be required
  • Must be able to wear a shoulder bag for documents and brochures
  • Must be able to multi-task and prioritize while still maintaining a customer service demeanor
  • Time management must be exercised
  • Must be extremely flexible and able to rapidly adjust to changing schedules
  • Proven ability to problem solve, plan, analyze, organize, exercise judgment, make effective decisions and effective use of delegation and empowerment are preferred
